10 Questions with Maryelle O’Rourke

1. Introduction: What's your story?

Makeup application has a great effect on people in how they feel and view themselves. My passion for makeup and the beauty of a smile came to me as a child as I watched my mother battle cancer. She would carefully select her makeup, wig, and scarf for the day, and when she was done making herself beautiful, she always completed her look with a smile – a finishing touch that I honor today. Having a team of amazingly talented artists that can literally change the way someone feels in a matter of just an hour is an incredible power talent to have and I am extremely grateful we are able to share it and make our living doing so.

2. What's your experience as a bridal hair & makeup artist? How many brides are in there in your portfolio?

Maryelle Artistry is an award-winning team of Boston-based artists working with brides and their bridal parties for over nine years. We have worked on hundreds of weddings and work with celebrity clients, including Meghan Markle, Kristen Wiig, Taylor Schilling, Jodie Foster, and many more (CLICK HERE for client list). Grooms are also an essential part of our clientele, as are the many high-profile clients we work with for men grooming, such as President Joe Biden, Steve Carell, Channing Tatum, Woody Harrelson, Kevin James, and many more. Our team of artists are committed to creating makeup and hair designs to make you look your best and suit your personal style.

3. What are the different packages that you offer and which one is your most popular package?

We offer à la carte services with a minimum per artist.

4. Do you have a team of assistants or will you be the only artist that day? What will happen if you're sick or have an emergency on the wedding day?

We are a team of artists and we also have a wealth of connections within our industry. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19, we have had the experience of an artist not being able to work. Still, due to our team support and also the extra support from our larger artist community, we have always covered our events with talented artists.

5. Do you charge a travel fee? For what distance? What does that cover?

Yes, travel time is charged at a half-day rate for out-of-town locations.
Hotels, flights, luggage, parking, and tolls are additional charges and will be added to the total bill when applicable. Mileage is billed if the artist uses their own vehicle outside of Boston, MA. There are no mileage fees within Boston

6. Can the bride book a wedding makeup trial appointment and will you also do a trial before the wedding?

Trials are usually booked three months before your wedding, but if you feel more comfortable, you can have your trial before you make a deposit for your wedding day. We generally do one trial for each bride. We strongly suggest having a trial. Think of your hair and or makeup trial as a dress rehearsal. It allows you to connect with your artist, decide on the details, and try out the "look" that works best with your personal style and comfort level. Your trial day is also an excellent opportunity to experiment and get your artist's feedback. False lashes, for example, are a great idea to try out at your trial if you are considering wearing them on your wedding day. You may decide the lashes were uncomfortable, and you may choose not to wear them or get eyelash extensions. The bottom line is your wedding day is not the day to try something new. It's a day where you want to feel excited and confident in already knowing your artist and the exact "look" she will be creating for you. And yes, rest assured, the artist you work with at your trial will be the same artist who will work with you on your wedding day.

7. What beauty products do you use and would you be open to the bride using her own make-up?

We are an on-location team of makeup artists and hairstylists and we bring all the equipment needed for your special day. We use a mix of top-of-the-line professional brands designed to keep your makeup lasting all day. We constantly add and change our products as new products are released to keep our looks new and fresh. If someone in your wedding party has allergies or just feels more comfortable using her own products, we are happy to use them for their service.

8. How can you make the bride's wedding makeup last and look good in photos?

A combination of using the correct products, including primers, powders, and setting spray, and the application techniques are all needed for your makeup to last all day. Also, keep in mind some quick tips for photos, including using a beautiful contour application (shimmer or flat depending on your desired look and coloring), starting your eye makeup tight to your lash line, and avoiding using SPF, minerals, and white finishing powder.

9. How long will makeup take on the day and how long will you be staying for on the day?

For the bride, we schedule one hour per service, and for attendants, we schedule 45 minutes per makeup service and one hour for hair service. How long we stay depends on how many services you have and how many of our team artists are booked for your day. We create a schedule for your day four weeks before and build in 15 minutes at the beginning for the artist to set up before the scheduled service time begins and another 15 minutes after the services are completed for any last-minute touchup before the artist wraps.

10. What is your cancellation and/or refund policy?

Cancellations made four weeks in advance, or less will be billed at the full rate. All deposits are non-refundable.
