Hair & Makeup Artist - Sarah Crews

10 Questions with Sarah Crews

1. Introduction: What's your story?

Hi, I am Sarah Crews, founder of Black Tie And Blush. I started my on-location beauty company in 2019 to expand on my freelance wedding business as a wedding hair stylist. My specialty is in craft hairstyling, primarily creative braiding and event styling. For the past 8 years, I have been a National Hair Styling Educator with the luxury hair care brand Kérastase, teaching the art of business and hair dressing techniques to other stylists in salons all across the U.S.

A few years ago, with event bookings almost every weekend and requests that I couldn't accommodate, I decided to gradually bring in fellow artists I knew whose work ethic, aesthetic, experience and expertise aligned with mine. Black Tie And Blush almost formed itself, and in 2019, we made it official.

Our team has grown so much since we began and we feel so fortunate to be able to serve the most amazing couples anywhere while indulging our passion for hair, makeup and all things beauty. All our artists are hand picked and invited by me. The bar is very high when it comes to who works on our team. The highest level of skill, professionalism and health consciousness are a must. Every single artist on our team is a dream to be with and we just love what we do.

2. What's your experience as a bridal hair & makeup artist? How many brides are in there in your portfolio?

I have loved hair since I was a kid. I was that teenager who did everyone's hair for prom and glammed all my friends for countless events and weddings even before I went to cosmetology school. I have done hundreds of wedding hair styles in my 20-plus year career as a licensed pro and many more before that. I think our best representation of our work is our Instagram profile. But for general inspiration on hair and makeup looks, we have a "Menu of Styles" on our website. Which shows basic silhouettes and vibes for hair as well as varying makeup looks.

3. What are the different packages that you offer and which one is your most popular package?

As of now, we offer 3 different packages. We believe in making things simple.

We have a Bride+2, Bride Plus 4 and a Bride Plus 8 package.
These packages include hair and makeup for all plus a complimentary on-location trial-run appointment for the bride or marrier.

All of these packages can be modified or added-to in order to accommodate any wedding party.

Where there are two brides or two grooms, for example, we can work those packages to give the best value.

We can add on a la carte services to the packages as well.
So we start with those basics and then work with each couple based on their individual needs.

4. Do you have a team of assistants or will you be the only artist that day? What will happen if you're sick or have an emergency on the wedding day?

Black Tie And Blush has a whole team of artists ready to serve our marriers. At the beginning of our booking process, we match the perfect artist to our bride(s) individual styles and preferences. We always include a trial run to be sure that the marrier(s) are super happy with their look and feel connected to and happy with their artist. The artist who does the trial run is reserved at that point and will be the person performing services on the day of the wedding. With larger wedding parties, our packages include additional artists so that everyone is ready and in love with their look on time and ready for those important photos!

In the event the artist who performed the trial run has an emergency or has an illness, Black Tie And Blush will provide the most similar artist available to ensure that everything goes forward smoothly and that the bride is just as ecstatic with her look on her wedding day as she was with her trial run. Our number 1 priority is to serve our couples flawlessly on their most important day.

Bottom line. We will come through for our couples.

5. Do you charge a travel fee? For what distance? What does that cover?

With any service we perform within a 20 mile radius of downtown Nashville, there is no travel fee.

For distances beyond 20 miles, travel fees apply based on distance.

6. Can the bride book a wedding makeup trial appointment and will you also do a trial before the wedding?

Absolutely! We have couples who have loved our "Try Before You Buy" option. A bride can book a hair styling trial, a makeup trial or both, separately with no commitment to book us!

This just allows for a risk free experience when making the decision to hire Black Tie And Blush.

With our packages and a la carte bride hair and makeup services, a trial run comes standard, included in the price.

7. What beauty products do you use and would you be open to the bride using her own make-up?

Our artists have extensive, professional kits. Each has his or her own preferences on skin care and makeup products they use. They carry a wide variety of brands for all skin types and levels of sensitivity. Sanitization and the prevention of cross-contamination is of the utmost importance in all of our artist's practices. With that being said, we are always open and happy to have anyone bring their favorites for us to use

8. How can you make the bride's wedding makeup last and look good in photos?

Every makeup artist on the team lives by the philosophy that it's all in the prep. Assessing each person's skin type is the first step they take to determining what the skin requires at the foundational level in order to support the finished look for the whole day and into the night. Properly prepping, hydrating and/or guarding against excessive oil production in the skin is perhaps the most important part of the makeup application. Each artist is specially trained to ask the right questions and make the correct assessments regarding product choice to ensure the end result is long lasting.

We also offer airbrush makeup application, which many people love because of the smooth flawless finish and the ability to stand up to tears, sweat and more!

9. How long will makeup take on the day and how long will you be staying for on the day?

We like to allow an hour for makeup application for brides and 45 minutes for all other adult wedding party members. We do offer the option of having an artist stay on for touch ups for the rest of the day and/or evening.

We like for the entire duration of services for the whole party to take no more than 5 hours total. Should we see that it will exceed that time, another artist is brought on to assist. Our packages include the additional artists needed for the number of people indicated in the package.

10. What is your cancellation and/or refund policy?

Upon booking, a 35% retainer fee submitted. This covers booking the artists and reserving their time. The fee is non- refundable after 3 days. Cancellation must be made 30 days prior to the reserved date or couples will be responsible for the full amount of services agreed upon in the contract. Should a cancellation be requested more than 30 days from the date of the wedding, any payments made, not including the 35% retainer fee will be refunded.

With that being said, we always do our best to accommodate our couples as best we can. We know that in light of things like a pandemic, we must remain flexible and willing to do our part to step up and try extra hard to work with date changes and rescheduling due to ever-changing guidelines. So we work on a case by case basis with any issues that arise to help our couples through the process and continue to serve them throughout all the changes.
