10 Questions with Tatum Faccenda

1. Introduction: What's your story?

Hi I'm Tatum Faccenda, owner of Makeup By Tatum. I discovered my passion for makeup over 13 years ago when I had my own makeup applied professionally. I'll never forget the feeling I had when looking in the mirror and seeing the amazing transformation the artist had done! From that point I was on a mission to figure out how to look like that everyday-there was no going back to my white eyeshadow and overdrawn eyeliner! I started by reading makeup artistry books by industry professionals (because this was before YouTube) and practicing doing makeup on myself and friends.

As my new skill began to grow, I started thinking about this being my career and how fun of a job it would be! A few years later the opportunity to work as a makeup artist at MAC Cosmetics was presented to me and I knew the position had to be mine! My passion for makeup and willingness to learn showed through and I got the job! I worked at MAC for 3 years while I built my makeup kit and expanded my knowledge and skill. I left there to freelance on my own and eventually start Makeup By Tatum which has now grown to a team of makeup artists that I book for weddings and events.

2. What's your experience as a bridal hair & makeup artist? How many brides are in there in your portfolio?

I have personally been doing wedding makeup for almost 10 years but my team and I have combined experience of 30+ years! There are countless numbers of brides in our portfolios and we work with all skin tones and ethnicities! It is a requirement when choosing artists for my team that their kit is stocked to accommodate everyone. I strive toward diversity and making sure that everyone feels welcome and taken care of when working with my team and I.

3. What are the different packages that you offer and which one is your most popular package?

Our pricing and package options are simple, clear and customizable to each bride's needs. False lashes and on-site services are an included option with each bridal session. Brides will have a choice of one of our four artists that they would like to work with and the artist options range in price, minimum requirements and airbrush application. Bridal party makeup starts at $85 and bridal makeup starts at $150 with travel included for the Columbus area. A signed contract and paid retainer fee is required for booking.

4. Do you have a team of assistants or will you be the only artist that day? What will happen if you're sick or have an emergency on the wedding day?

I typically book one artist for a wedding party but I do offer the option of adding a second artist for larger groups. If there are multiple artists booked, it is up to the bride who will be the lead artist and doing her makeup. I do not have assistants, my team and I are all capable artists with bridal experience. In case of emergency, I not only have my team of artists to rely on as backups but also an extended network of artists. I will always take care of my clients and make sure they have a great experience and there will be an artist there on their wedding day!

5. Do you charge a travel fee? For what distance? What does that cover?

On-site services are an included option with a bridal makeup application and that is for the Columbus area. We can travel as far outside of Columbus as needed but we charge by milage outside of the Columbus area.

6. Can the bride book a wedding makeup trial appointment and will you also do a trial before the wedding?

Trials are optional but highly recommended! The trial is an option when building the bride's makeup package. Trials can be scheduled prior to or after booking. I like brides to have the option of trying out their makeup artist and bridal makeup look before booking if they prefer!

7. What beauty products do you use and would you be open to the bride using her own make-up?

Being that I started at MAC, I love and trust their products so my artists and I do use their foundations as well as other quality brands. We are completely fine with incorporating the brides products if she prefers but a trial would be necessary in that case. It is not ideal for the artist to work with new products on the wedding day. To be able to use the bride's products beforehand at the trial, would be best for the artist so that they are comfortable and the final outcome of the makeup does not suffer.

8. How can you make the bride's wedding makeup last and look good in photos?

Each makeup session is customized to the brides preferences and skin type. Our artists will use primers and long wearing products as well as products and application techniques that look best in photos. Quality products and experienced artistry is key in getting the best bridal makeup! As an added bonus, any client that works with myself will also get a lip color sample for touch ups!

9. How long will makeup take on the day and how long will you be staying for on the day?

Application time varies per person depending on the look they desire but it typically takes 30-45 minutes per person of the bridal party and 45-60 minutes for the bride's makeup. The artist will be scheduled appropriately for the wedding party size with a time cushion at the end for touch ups. The artist will only be on-site to apply each person's makeup but can be booked for an hourly rate to stay through the ceremony for touch ups!

10. What is your cancellation and/or refund policy?

Cancellation of services must be made 30 days prior to the wedding date and the retainer fee is non-refundable. If the cancellation is made with less than a 30 day notice then the client is responsible for paying 50% of the total amount due.
