History of The Barn at UVX Rustic Ranch

United Verde Extension hails back to the mining communities of Jerome, Clarkdale, and Clemenceau, Arizona. Therefore, UVX Road was used as a means to travel through the Verde Valley. With the closure of the mines and the great depression under full swing, the ranch lands of the Verde Valley fell on hard times. In the year 1935, the dairy farm would eventually become the UVX Rustic Ranch Venue.

In June of 1935, the Mongini Brothers purchased the land from 3 Italian families. One owning land, another possessing equipment, and the last maintaining livestock. They purchased the land and the dairy farm which, at the time, had only 5 cows. Emil Mongini would later record what a wonder it was that the three families were able to run a successful dairy, with only 5 cows. After the purchase of the dairy and ranch, it was discovered that under the rustic barn was a hidden passageway that lead to a copper still. That still produced enough Moonshine to keep the dairy open and the proprietors above ground, supporting all 3 families.

Once the Mongini’s took over the dairy, they developed a successful business that spanned over 22 years. They delivered milk all over the Verde Valley until 1953. At that time they moved out of the rustic barn and moved into the new barn. On December 13, 1967, a historic snowfall of 3 feet hit the Verde Valley and put so much weight on the roof of the old barn that the roof and much of the barn collapsed. In 1969, federal regulations forced the closure of the dairy.

From that point, the Mongini family began running cattle on the ranch. Today, the ranch has stayed in the family for two generations, and continues to run cattle, running between 60 to 100 head of cattle each year.

In 2005, after undergoing extensive renovations, The Barn at UVX Rustic Ranch has brought life to the old dairy, and is now a gorgeous venue in Cottonwood, Arizona.
