Apricity Images

Description

If you found your way here, chances are you’re planning a wedding. And chances are equally high that you’re already overwhelmed with all the decisions there are to make. I’m glad you found me.

My name is Sara DeGroot and I am the owner and lead photographer of Apricity Images. I grew up in Cheyenne, Wyoming and spent about 95% of my childhood barefoot in the outdoors. I also attended the University of Wyoming on a debate scholarship. So, by default, I suppose that makes me a bit of a nerd.

Perhaps, like me, the last time you were professionally photographed was at the end of high school. And perhaps, also like me, that wasn’t the most natural experience. To answer the obvious questions: yes, the shoulder pads are real. No, the library is not. I am very aware that this is not a *normal* process for most people and do my best to make it as enjoyable as possible.

Life has been unpredictable. My previous jobs were all in healthcare and, most recently, cornea donation, which I was drawn to after my father received a cornea transplant to restore his vision. It was important work, but very emotionally taxing. I came to a crossroads and needed to decide what I would find fulfilling for the rest of my life.

My decision to start a photography business was a culmination of many events. I decided I wanted to do something I was passionate about. I wanted something with a creative outlet. Ideally, something that would let me spend some time outdoors. And the importance we put on our sense of sight and fragility of our vision still weighed heavily upon me. But mostly, I wanted to interact with people during the best, rather than worst, moments of their lives. Being a Colorado wedding photographer has given me the opportunity to work with an amazing array of people all around the Rocky Mountain area and I couldn’t be happier with the direction life has taken me.

Many people never get the luxury to pursue their passion as a career, and it wouldn’t be possible without the support of my family- especially my husband. He has such ceaseless patience that he even lets me dress him up for ridiculous Christmas cards each year!

We live in Aurora with our two dogs, Buster and Frisco, and one very disapproving cat, Gizmo. Everything we own is covered in fur. And we are unashamed geeks! Both of us love playing board & video games and can spend hours discussing how Game of Thrones should have ended. We used to each enjoy rafting until I almost drowned on our first date. As a result, we now stick to camping, hiking, and other land-based activities. We are also passionate about music, terrible movies, cooking, and (of course) the Broncos!

At the beginning of 2017, we welcomed the newest addition to our family: Alexander Edward (named after my great-grandfather and grandfather). He has changed our lives for the better in countless ways, but he probably doesn’t yet comprehend just how many hours of his life are about to be spent in front of a camera. For anyone on the fence about having children, let me tell you this: they definitely expand your possibilities for group Halloween costumes.
