10 Questions with Ashley and Alyssa Tucker

1. Introduction: What's your story?

A&A Bridal Hair and Makeup started out with 2 sisters - Ashley and Alyssa Tucker. Ashley does makeup and Alyssa does both hair and makeup. We both separately worked freelance for weddings and event hair and makeup and came together in 2015 to start our own company. We quickly grew and started a team of artists in 2016. Ashley has always been in love with makeup and is definitely her passion. Alyssa started out doing makeup, and began doing hair around 8 years ago. She now mainly only does hair and loves doing boho, rustic hair styles. We both love getting to be a part of a bride's most special day and making her and her bridal party feel beautiful.

2. What's your experience as a bridal hair & makeup artist? How many brides are in there in your portfolio?

Ashley's experience in makeup professionally is 16 years. Alyssa has 14 years experience in makeup and 8 years experience in hair. Our team of artists range from 6 to 14 years experience in hair and makeup.
We have all worked on hundreds of brides over the years. Ashley has done over 1,000 makeups in the last 16 years.

3. What are the different packages that you offer and which one is your most popular package?

Bride hair and makeup is currently $235. Hair and makeup for the bridal party or attendees is $160 total per person or $175 including airbrush makeup. Engagement photos, bridal showers, trial runs, any other hair and makeup events rates are $100 for airbrush makeup, $85 for traditional makeup and $75 for hair styles. Lashes are included for all makeup services.

4. Do you have a team of assistants or will you be the only artist that day? What will happen if you're sick or have an emergency on the wedding day?

We have a team of artists - 4 makeup artists and 4 hair stylists. Depending on the size of the wedding, there can be 1-3 artists per type of service. For 8 or more ladies, we normally will bring on 2 artists for that type of service. If an emergency occurred, we would contact one of our other artists to replace us.

5. Do you charge a travel fee? For what distance? What does that cover?

We charge a $25 travel fee within Fresno/Clovis for on location services. Fees are waived if there are at least 3 clients per service type. For on location services outside of Fresno/Clovis, fees are calculated at $0.75 per mile and increase depending on time it takes to get to a certain location. For example, locations in Yosemite may only be 60 miles away, which would normally cost $90, however it can take over 2 hours one way. We would then determine the fee based off of time it takes, instead of just mileage. Depending on the time services need to be completed and distance, accommodations may also be required.

6. Can the bride book a wedding makeup trial appointment and will you also do a trial before the wedding?

Brides can definitely book a trial run. They are not necessary, but do offer peace of mind and help speed up the process for the day of the wedding. Trials are $160 for hair and makeup. We recommend doing trials a month or two before the wedding, however we have done them up to a year in advance.

7. What beauty products do you use and would you be open to the bride using her own make-up?

We use a variety of quality makeup products. Some professional brands such as Temptu, Makeup Atelier, Danessa Myricks, department store brands such as Makeup Forever, MAC Cosmetics, Laura Mercier, Cover FX, Inglot, etc. We can use the bride's lip color, however we do not use other personal makeup as we may not be familiar with how it works in conjunction with our other products.

8. How can you make the bride's wedding makeup last and look good in photos?

We prep everyone's skin, which is important in how the makeup will sit on the skin and stay on. Airbrush is a great option for lasting all day, through sweat and tears. Most of our traditional foundations are water resistant and long wearing. We also seal makeup with a setting spray and use waterproof mascara. Lip colors in matte and liquid lipstick can be used for long wear.

9. How long will makeup take on the day and how long will you be staying for on the day?

We allow 1 hour per service for the bridal party/attendees, so a total of 2 hours for hair and makeup. Bride's hair and makeup usually takes around 2 1/2 hours total. We leave when all services are completed. Bride's can pay an hourly rate after services are completed to have artists stay for touch ups/change of hairstyle.

10. What is your cancellation and/or refund policy?

Retainer fees are non-refundable. Full balance is due if wedding is cancelled less than 60 dates from event date. Cancellation of a wedding will forfeit the retainer fee.
