10 Questions with Bethany Tiesman

1. Introduction: What's your story?

Hello Brides! My name is Bethany Tiesman and I am a Brow/Lash/Makeup Artist. I have been coloring outside the lines of the Louisville beauty scene for the last twenty years. With roots in nearby Elizabethtown, I first began experimenting with color well before my teen years. I was the girl sent home from school with instructions to wash the rainbow off my face.

My career began in cosmetology, but quickly I realized my passion was in transforming women into the most glamourous versions of themselves. While working in some of the top salons in Louisville, before moving up as an educator for the Aveda brand, I knew I was destined to follow my passion by becoming a full-time makeup artist. Today, my award-winning talents have graced the covers of regional and national publications and my services are continuously in demand for commercial, bridal, and red carpet events.

One of the few regional artists to celebrate the flawlessness of airbrush makeup, I am busy year-round transforming faces for photoshoots, weddings, and even in-studio beauty lessons. I adore red carpet beauty! I watch all of the award shows and love to see what celebrities are wearing. Most of the looks are perfect for brides or clients celebrating a special occasion.

Working with brides and bridal parties is an exciting part of my job and a responsibility I take both seriously and sincerely. I want my brides to feel like themselves, but just a very glamorous version of themselves. Your wedding bouquet will wither, but your flawless face in photos are forever!

I custom tailor my packages and experiences to each and every client. Whether it’s a bride inspired by the timeless beauty of Audrey Hepburn, or a woman wanting a fresh look for Derby season, my versatility and artistic eye begins with a personalized consultation for each client and a trial makeup run before the big event. I love helping my brides look and FEEL BEAUTY-full!

2. What's your experience as a bridal hair & makeup artist? How many brides are in there in your portfolio?

I've spent 20 years in the beauty industry and focused solely on brides for the last 14 years. I've done hundreds of brides and typically average 35-50 weddings a year. However, starting in 2021 I've decided to focus my energy on only 25 weddings. Booking only 1 wedding per weekend will ensure that I am making my brides, and her party's experience, AMAZING!

3. What are the different packages that you offer and which one is your most popular package?

I offer several packages and typically The Bridal Cast has previously been my most popular. This package includes airbrush makeup applications on the wedding day for the bride +6, an in studio trial for bride, faux lashes, and a touch up kit for bride.

In 2021 brides are booking choosing some customized options by choosing their package and adding on additional makeup services for their rehearsal dinner and/or their engagement session and then adding on salon services for lash extensions, henna brows, or a lash lift and tint to make their beauty lash all the way through the honeymoon!

4. Do you have a team of assistants or will you be the only artist that day? What will happen if you're sick or have an emergency on the wedding day?

For parties of 6 or more my assistant will be added to your package and accompany me on your wedding day! The assistant is there to assist me and is not a second artist.

Should an emergency arise, making it not possible for me to provide your makeup services, I have a network of professional makeup artists that could possibly be available. I would provide them with a face chart and full details of the completed look.

Should an emergency occur and another artist not be available I would provide a refund of the balance paid.

However, with that said in my 20 yrs I have NEVER cancelled on a bride. Even when I was in the ER overnight and released in the early hours of the morning I showed up bright eyed and bushy tailed 2 hours later for my bride! I am committed and take my job as their artist very seriously AND sincerely!

5. Do you charge a travel fee? For what distance? What does that cover?

Travel inside of Metro Louisville is included in all of the bridal packages.

Outside of the Metro Louisville area a travel fee would be required. Travel fees cover mileage and time for the artist.

Brides can inquire about their location for a quote.

6. Can the bride book a wedding makeup trial appointment and will you also do a trial before the wedding?

One bridal trial run is included in every booked/contracted BEAUTY by Bethany package. This is the time to discuss the look you'd like for your wedding day. You can bring inspirational pictures, your hair piece and/or jewelry, and it is suggested to try to book your hair trial on the same day as well as a quick dress try on if possible.

Should a bride want to book a trial run without booking their contract first they are more than happy to do so. Trial runs are $150.

Trial runs are typically booked @3 months prior to the wedding but can be booked at any time once their contract is booked.

7. What beauty products do you use and would you be open to the bride using her own make-up?

High pigment colors, excellent formulas, and shade ranges for everyone make it possible for me to keep my kit stocked with my cosmetic line of STELLA BEAUTY products. I also have used professional makeup lines such as: Hourglass, Senna, Viseart, Natasha Denona, Danessa Myricks, Ben Nye, NARS, Makeup Forever, and Kevyn Aucoin as well as a few favorite drugstore finds. I keep my favorites in my kit... make sure to ask me about my fave mascara!

Due to COVID19 guidelines, and insurance liability, I can not use anyone else's personal products. Should a bride have a certain product that they love and REALLY want to use it can be discussed at the trial. If allowed it can ONLY be used if it is a brand new and unopened package.

8. How can you make the bride's wedding makeup last and look good in photos?

As a bridal artist the most important part of a brides makeup look is that she FEELS beautiful! That is accomplished through technique and application from an experienced artist. This is one reason why I specialize in airbrush makeup! Airbrush makeup is extremely long-lasting and needs very little touch up's; however, brides will need to touch up their lip color and lipliner (if used), and utilize blotting papers to minimize shine.

All of BEAUTY by Bethany's brides receive a complimentary touch-up kit. Lip products and additional touch-up kits are available for purchase on the wedding day for other bridal party members. Brides often purchase lip glosses or lipsticks for their bridal party members making it a great gift!

9. How long will makeup take on the day and how long will you be staying for on the day?

Typically a brides makeup is booked for an hour, bridal party members are booked for 45 mins, set up/break down is 30 mins. each, and then there might be wiggle room booked just in case ANYTHING additional arrise … such as watering/crying eyes.

On your BEAUTY by Bethany contract your timeline is laid out after discussing your time to be ready with your planner/photographer/or the bride herself. Once that time to be ready is know I will make a timeline for makeup and it will be entered onto your contract for you to have signed off on. This timeline is custom to each bride.

If additional add on services such as rehearsal dinner makeup, touch ups on the wedding day, or a change of makeup service for the reception is booked that will also be detailed on the timeline.

10. What is your cancellation and/or refund policy?

BEAUTY by Bethany commits to only 1 bride per weekend committing my time and availability to this limited selection. Therefore this precious time is in demand.

A bride is booked once I have received a completed contract and a non-refundable retainer has been paid. There is a 3 day grace period once the contract is returned and this is the ONLY time changes and/or cancellations are allowed. This window of time allows brides to make any changes to their number of makeup applications, timeline, location, etc. Past this grace period no significant changes can be made and should a bride cancel, in writing, their full balance will still be due.
