1. Introduction: What's your story?
Hello there! I'm Janine Johnson, owner at MUAH by J - Hair & Makeup Artistry! My passion for makeup actually began when I was in elementary school and wanted to win Halloween costume contests. Anytime a friend needed help with their makeup they came to me and eventually started telling me I should try everyday looks and not just the special effects. While it took some getting used to, and a whole lot of practice, I absolutely fell in love with it, too! While I have offered various makeup services for nearly a quarter decade, I became licensed to do hair in 2010, because many clients mentioned not wanting to schedule more than one business to do both services.
I attend continuing education classes to keep up with the latest trends in both hair styling and makeup artistry and my staff also continuously practice their trade. We have only the sweetest, funniest, most down to earth stylists working for us, because, let's be honest, they're more fun to hang out with all day.
2. What's your experience as a bridal hair & makeup artist? How many brides are in there in your portfolio?
I have twenty plus years as a makeup artist and eleven years as a hair stylist. I've lost count of the exact number of brides and bridal parties we have befriended and performed services on over the years. Both of the stylists who travel with me each have over ten years in the business, as well. We have heaps of testimonials across the internet that you are more than welcome to google, should you choose!
3. What are the different packages that you offer and which one is your most popular package?
We don't offer tiered or pre-structured packages. We don't feel that you should have to choose from services someone else may want, but that you might not care for.
All of our packages are customized to your specific needs. The more you book, the more we package to keep it affordable. We do have base prices as a starting point, but since every wedding and wedding party is different, we want you to choose what you need! We encourage potential clients to visit the contact tab on our website and fill out the questionnaire there with their details for the day. We will send you a quote that fits only your needs, so as not to be overwhelming. Of course, we are always happy to answer questions.
4. Do you have a team of assistants or will you be the only artist that day? What will happen if you're sick or have an emergency on the wedding day?
Absolutely! We have a team of stylists that are able to perform both hair and makeup styling. Dependent upon the size of the bridal party, one to three of us will attend on your wedding day.
We've, thankfully, never had an emergency that has kept us away from our clients on their wedding day (except during the pandemic, when weddings were postponed). However, we do have clauses in our contract that include these instances, should they ever arise, and explain in full detail how they are handled.
5. Do you charge a travel fee? For what distance? What does that cover?
In some cases, yes. Dependent upon your location, travel fees are applicable and will be listed as such in your quote. The first twenty miles are complimentary, and the remaining miles to/from the location will be added to your quote.
An accommodation fee may be charged if an overnight stay is required.
6. Can the bride book a wedding makeup trial appointment and will you also do a trial before the wedding?
While we do have many destination brides that are not able to have a trial before the wedding, we absolutely recommend it as it gives you the chance to see your wedding day look ahead of time.
Most of our bridal packages include a trial, however, you are more than welcome to schedule a trial prior to booking at the a la carte rates.
Trials are held one to two months prior to the wedding day at our salon location. We highly recommend bringing a photo of your dress, any hair and inspiration photos you'd like to show us and your veil or any hair decorations you may like to wear on the wedding day. Another tip we would like to share is to look for photos online of models who have a similar hair type and color, as well as skin tone, to yours. This will give you a better idea of how the style may look on you. If you have fine brown hair, look for photos of models with the same hair type, whereas, if you are looking at blonde models with thick hair (and often, extensions), your hair may not be able to hold the same style and may not reflect the light the same way. If you have questions, don't hesitate to reach out!
7. What beauty products do you use and would you be open to the bride using her own make-up?
We use a large variety professional products that are approved by the FDA and the EU. All of our makeup brush cleansers and hair styling products are also FDA/EU approved. These products, when paired with our techniques, have staying power and are skin safe.
In certain cases (allergies and skin concerns, also listed in our contract), brides and/or bridal party members may bring their own makeup. However, should a member of the party choose to bring their own makeup/skincare prep, we do not guarantee the staying power of the products.
8. How can you make the bride's wedding makeup last and look good in photos?
We pair professional products and techniques that have worked for our clients throughout the years. We are constantly experimenting with newer products on the market to see what will and what won't work for our brides and their bridal parties.
We also have a consultation with you at your trial to find out your likes/dislikes, daily skincare and makeup wear and how you would like to look on the day of your wedding. We take notes and build the best regimen for your day, ensuring that you still look great at the end of it.
9. How long will makeup take on the day and how long will you be staying for on the day?
Timing all depends upon your needs. Just a bride who needs hair and makeup? Generally, your stylist will stay with you for approximately two hours. Of course, if you have a lot of hair, then it may take longer.
Are you a bride, with a bridal party of ten? Obviously, this will take longer. Dependent upon how many in the bridal party request services, as well as staff availability, one to three stylists would attend and each would work consecutively to finish your entire tribe by the time you have requested by answering the questionnaire on our website.
We also leave a bit of time to cushion bridal services, in case anyone needs to eat, brush their teeth, or for all of you to get dressed when we are finished. Often times, we are finished well ahead of your requested time (but never after it), leaving you extra time to hang out and relax.
If you'd prefer stylist, or the team, are available throughout the day to change your look, or be on standby to pin any fly aways during your outdoor photo session, you can book additional time for the day into your contract.
10. What is your cancellation and/or refund policy?
Late, cancellation, postponement and refund policies are listed in full in our contract. While we do try to be flexible and give our clients grace when unforeseen circumstances arise, especially last year with COVID, this is our livelihood, so we must have these policies in place to protect it and our business.
