10 Questions with Marlene Ayala

1. Introduction: What's your story?

Hi Everyone!

I'm Marlene Ayala, and I'm an Arizona local and professional bridal makeup and hairstylist! My love for beauty came from my mother. I followed my mother's footsteps as she was also a hairstylist and salon owner. She has always been my inspiration & my biggest fan, and honestly knew I was going to be amazing in the beauty industry before I even started. Given the opportunity in high school, I was able to complete the cosmetology program where I soon found out my passion for makeup. At 18 I began freelancing and was offered to work in NYC for the IMTAS! I worked as a stylist with DUH. After this opportunity, it opened the doors for me as I was able to work with photographers, makeup artists, companies, and brides! After some time I became a Sephora Beauty advisor and learned all about product knowledge & fell more in love with the beauty industry! After a few months, I decided to leave the beauty counter to follow my love for makeup and became a full-time makeup artist! After 5 years of doing makeup full time I am happy to say I've been able to work with amazing designers, actresses, singers, magazines, company's and have made lifelong besties! (Which I have to admit is the BEST part!). Now, let me stop talking about myself... I want to get to know YOU! I am fully invested in making you feel the best you have ever felt no matter the occasion! I'm so excited to work with you!

2. What's your experience as a bridal hair & makeup artist? How many brides are in there in your portfolio?

My experience as a bridal hair and makeup has been absolutely amazing. Thankfully, at the early age of 18, my love for bridal began. Bridal artistry is so important to brides, this may be biased but the way you look and feel on the biggest day of your life is so important. Doing makeup is amazing but when I started doing bridal makeup my love for makeup shifted, it became and felt even more real how much I care about making someone feel their absolute BEST when they come to me and sit in my chair knowing these photos will be looked at forever. After 5 years of doing a wedding, I came confidently to say, I was definitely made for this. I love working with my brides as we become friends and I continue seeing them for baby showers, first birthdays, and so on. Making over 200 brides happy over the years!

3. What are the different packages that you offer and which one is your most popular package?

My standard package & Most popular is, bride hair and makeup + bridesmaid and or mother of bride and mother of the groom. It's very convenient to have everyone do their makeup and hair by my team and me! The add on's that make it more expensive is if it's out of Phoenix Arizona, or have me stay back for touch-ups!

4. Do you have a team of assistants or will you be the only artist that day? What will happen if you're sick or have an emergency on the wedding day?

I do have a team of ladies that work with me every weekend and are well trained and have learned my techniques over the years. If an emergency were to occur, I fully trust my team to take over OR I will help find a new artist that can help for the big day!

5. Do you charge a travel fee? For what distance? What does that cover?

For travel, I do travel in the state or out of state, and I have even gone out of the country for my brides. All travel fees are different but definitely possible!

6. Can the bride book a wedding makeup trial appointment and will you also do a trial before the wedding?

Bridal trials are absolutely highly suggested to have a smooth-running wedding day! You should always trust your artist and that's why it's important to meet and make sure they can fully understand your vision!

7. What beauty products do you use and would you be open to the bride using her own make-up?

I do traditional makeup, I use a lot of different products from high-end to low-end depending on what I need! Price doesn't mean it's always great.

Here's a list of brands I use:

-Tarte
-Dior Makeup
-Charlotte Tilbury
-Chanel Makeup
-Patrick Ta
-Makeupforever
-Hudabeauty
-Maybelline
-Fenty Beauty
-Benefit Cosmetics
-Anastasia Beverly Hills
-Rare Beauty
-Nudestix
-Etc...

I am open to the bride bringing her own makeup if she knows she has allergies!

8. How can you make the bride's wedding makeup last and look good in photos?

My makeup application technique for a bride is special but what I can tell you is that a full coverage foundation is important but making sure it is a thin amount versus a lot of makeup on your face. It's important to know each client and what they're looking for, talking about all the dos and dont's . Making sure I am using the right products for skin types is extremely important and will create a longer-lasting finish. When talking to my bride I like to ask what kind of editing her photographer is doing that way I know how dark or light I need to make the makeup application for it to show up in photos but also not too much where my bride feels uncomfortable in person, it is important to know balance.

9. How long will makeup take on the day and how long will you be staying for on the day?

Hair and makeup can take up to 3 hours & I stay as long as you need me but their is a charge for staying back for touch up's.

10. What is your cancellation and/or refund policy?

My cancellation and refund policy are once you make a deposit to save your date, the deposit is nonrefundable, but if you pay the full balance and you cancel your wedding I do send back 50% of the total. Also, if you need to reschedule your wedding day, your deposit is able to be moved to your next date as long as it's within the next year.
